Wirksworth stay top as Ladies League returns to action
The Derbyshire Ladies League returned after the extended break at the weekend.
A brace for Poppy Lloyd helped Wirksworth maintain their lead at the top with a 4-1 win at home to Ilkeston Town Development.
Draycott are hot on Wirksworth’s heels and maintained their challenge with three goals without reply against Mercia. Goals came from Sarah Upton, Rebecca Turgoose, and Joanne Hill.
Third-placed Mickleover lost ground at home on the top two, despite leading scorer Beth Jones maintaining her scoring record with a brace, as Georgia Williams and Sofia Morrisey proved an effective combination with a hat-trick of assists and goals respectively for the visitors in a 3-2 win.
Belper Town and Pride Park’s game did not go ahead after a serious non-contact injury in the final stages of the warm-up, Pride Park defender Janine Wardman sustaining a dislocated ankle and triple break.
In Division Two, Matlock Town and Chesterfield Inspire Blues continue to set the pace in first and second with wins against Woodlands Reserves (3-1) and Sleetmoor Utd (5-0) respectively.
Sandiacre Town have moved into third, ahead of Woodlands Reserves on goal difference, after a goalless draw against Belper Town Development. There were also winning returns for University of Derby and Stanton Ilkeston.
