Spireites' FA Cup hopes end at hands of European champions Chelsea
Emirates FA Cup Third Round
Werner 6, Hudson-Odoi 18, Lukaku 20, Christensen 39, Ziyech 55pen
Chesterfield proved no match for European Champions Chelsea in the FA Cup on Saturday but came away with their heads held high.
Four first-half goals, three of them in the first 20 minutes, killed the Spireites off before they had any chance of even bedding in at Stamford Bridge, but Akwasi Asante's late consolation goal at least gave the 6,000 travelling fans a moment to remember against a strong Blues line-up.
Few expected Chesterfield to win the tie but they'd perhaps have preferred to hold out for a little longer to frustrate their hosts than the sixth minute when Chelsea went in front, Timo Werner netting from close range after Hakim Ziyech's shot had been parried away by Scott Loach in the Spireites goal.
The lead was doubled on 18 minutes thanks to a wonderful curling shot from Callum Hudson-Odoi, with Romelu Lukaku then making it three moments later as he turned in Lewis Hall's cross following a mix-up at the back.
Chesterfield enjoyed one or two forays forward and Manny Oyeleke's drive narrowly missed the target with the best of them, but Andreas Christensen soon made it 4-0 as his looping header dropped into the net following another Loach block.
Chelsea got their fifth early in the second-half, Ziyech's low penalty finding the net after a foul on Christian Pulisic by sub Calvin Miller.
Chances would continue to come and go before Chesterfield had their moment ten minutes from time, Kabongo Tshimanga finding space and seeing his shot parried by Marcus Bettinelli in the Chelsea goal but Asante following up to tap home the rebound.
That would end the scoring, but Chesterfield had done their fans proud in West London and were rightly applauded off by both sets of supporters once the tie had come to a close.
