REPORT/REACTION: Spireites come unstuck against Magpies

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE

MAIDENHEAD UNITED 2-0 CHESTERFIELD

Chesterfield suffered their third defeat under James Rowe on a windy afternoon at York Road where Maidenhead United deservedly beat the Spireites 2-0.

Rowe made two changes to the side that beat Yeovil last weekend. Will Evans and Martin Smith came into the side to replace Fraser Kerr and Curtis Weston (suspended).

The game started off in a scrappy fashion with neither team managing to carve out any clear cut chances.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Chesterfield failed to deal with a goal-kick that fell to Dan Sparkes. He raced down the left-hand side and found Nathan Blissett who tapped home from close range.

Chesterfield had the chance to level proceedings when Akwasi Asante played the ball through to Alex Whittle who was denied by the legs of Magpies ‘keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond. The rebound fell to Liam Mandeville however he couldn’t make connection with the ball and it was recovered by the home side.

The hosts came close soon after when Remy Clerima’s dangerous cross rolled across the face of goal.

In the 33rd minute George Carline headed Jak McCourt’s corner towards goal but Ashby-Hammond saved comfortably.

The hosts started the second half brightly and doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Josh Coley got past Laurence Maguire with ease to provide for Sparkes who fired past Grant Smith to make it 2-0.

Rowe made a double substitution just before the hour mark. Adi Yussuf and Nathan Tyson both coming on as Chesterfield searched for a way to get back into the game.

McCourt had an effort on target and Tyson headed one over but the Spireites failed to find the back of the net meaning they went home from York Road empty handed.
