Matlock forced to postpone games and forfeit FA Trophy tie
Matlock Town will be taking an enforced beak from playing football until Tuesday, November 3 following further reports of positive tests for COVID-19 in their playing squad and management team.
The Gladiators had already been forced to postpone their home game with Scarborough Athletic on Saturday, but now Tuesday night’s scheduled home meeting with Nantwich Town plus the Buildbase FA Trophy visit to Coalville Town on Saturday are also now off. The Gladiators will be forced to forfeit their place in the FA Trophy competition.
Matlock’s assistant manager, Dave Wild, confirmed that he was one of the members of the coaching staff that have tested positive on his own personal Twitter account on Saturday evening.
A club spokesman said: “While it’s very disappointing that this situation has arisen with the team on such a good run, the health of everyone must be paramount so we need to follow instructions and guidelines to the letter to ensure that everyone stays safe.
“I’m sure all of our supporters and everyone connected with the football club wishes a speedy recovery to those affected and our supporters will no doubt be back supporting our players once we can resume playing football again."
As things stand Matlock’s next game will now be a visit to Atherton Colleries on November 3.
The news comes as a blow for Matlock who have made an excellent start to the 2020/21 campaign. The Gladiators currently sit in fifth position in the NPL Premier Division table with games in hand on all four teams that are above them.
