Ilkeston remain unbeaten after winning at Spalding with ten men

Ilkeston Town defied having to play nearly the whole match with ten men by overcoming hosts Spalding United 2-1 in Lincolnshire on Tuesday night.

It means the Robins remain unbeaten in all competitions so far, Zak Goodson scoring both of their goals to secure the three points.

There were only six minutes on the clock when Ilkeston went in front, Jack Thomas finding Alex Troke who in turn pulled the ball back to Goodson and he fired home.

However, the visitors were then reduced to ten men just 11 minutes in when full-back Charlie Marzano went in late on Tom Warren and was shown a straight red card.

Ilkeston responded well, Ollie Brown-Hill shooting wide and Goodson doing similar before the half was out.

United nearly levelled early in the second-half when Lewis Brownhill's shot was cleared off the line by Kieran Fenton.

And that proved crucial, as six minutes later the Robins lead was doubled as Brown-Hill's shot was blocked but Goodson was able to stroke home the rebound.

Spalding nearly pulled one back soon afterwards when Fenton headed against his own post under pressure, before they did finally score with five minutes to go thanks to a thunderous strike from Scott Floyd when a corner was cleared to him.

The hosts put pressure on late in the game, Jamie Goddard seeing an effort go close in stoppage time, but the Robins held on for the three points.
