Hollis nets the winner as Spireites prevail at Sutton
Chesterfield secured their second win under new boss James Rowe as Haydn Hollis's first-half goal was enough to earn all three points at Sutton United on Tuesday night.
It means the Spireites remain unbeaten under Rowe after three games in charge as they look to continue their progress up the National League North table.
Chesterfield had completed the signings of George Carline and Joel Taylor in the run-up to the game and both were included from the start as Rowe continued his shake up of the Spireites squad.
Another recent acquisition, Tom Whelan, went close early on but saw his long range strike held by keeper Dean Bouzanis.
United responded with Kyle Letheren having to be alert to tip David Ajiboye's shot around the post, but five minutes later would come the decisive moment of the match.
Carline produced a long throw into the penalty area and Hollis got a faint touch to guide the ball home into the corner of the net.
It could have been two just before half-time as Carline headed just wide from Akwasi Asante's cross, Asante himself then forcing Bouzanis into a save low down, but the break arrived with just the one goal lead.
United had plenty of possession in the second-half but the visitors withstood much of the pressure as Chesterfield defended well with numerous balls into the penalty area.
The best chance for Sutton came when Harry Beautyman fired a great opportunity over the top from close range and that would prove costly.
Hollis nearly got a second late on with a volley from a corner, but his first-half strike ultimately proved enough to take the points.
Chesterfield return to action on Saturday when they host Barnet at the Technique Stadium.
