FA Cup penalty joy for Spireites as County are dispatched

Chesterfield progressed to the first round proper of the FA Cup on Saturday as they overcame divisional rivals Stockport County on penalties.

The sides drew 1-1 after 90 minutes, Spireites eventually prevailing 7-6 on spot kicks to secure their passage through.

In a much-changed side to that which was beaten at Wealdstone on Tuesday, Chesterfield were on the back foot early on with Kyle Letheren having to push away a strike Alex Reid eight minutes in, Lois Maynard heading the subsequent corner too high.

Laurence Maguire replied with his own header over the top, before David Buchanan forced a good save out of County keeper Ben Hinchliffe and Jordan Cropper volleyed wide for the visitors.

Hinchliffe was on hand again to deny the returning Nathan Tyson with his legs following Tom Denton's flick, but the break arrived with neither side able to break through.

Milan Butterfield felt he should have had a penalty early in the second-half when clipped by Liam Hogan, the referee not interested, with County responding by seeing Adam Thomas and Hogan both have shots cleared off the line.

County finally broke through after an hour as Hogan this time made no mistake with a tap in after Letheren had failed to deal effectively with a corner.

However, Chesterfield thought they had levelled on 76 minutes as Tom Denton hit his own team-mate Buchanan with his first effort but found the net with his second, but Buchanan was deemed to have been offside.

The goal did come with four minutes to go, Butterfield lashing the ball home from Denton's knock-down to ensure the game would go to spot-kicks.

John Rooney and Josef Yarney both saw kicks saved early in the shoot-out but with the scores eventually at 6-6, Sam Minihan put his kick over the bar and Butterfield was able to step up and win the tie for Spireites.
