Allan strikes twice as Alfreton secure first win of the season
NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH
Hatfield 60, 85pen
Alfreton Town 3
Allan 36, 51
Alfreton Town at last have something to celebrate after edging home by the odd goal in five when they visited Darlington on Saturday.
However, the win should have been achieved more easily as the Reds had cruised into a 3-0 lead inside 51 minutes, a brace by Will Hatfield having supporters on edge as they awaited their maiden victory and their first win in 11 competitive matches dating back to November 2020 against Farsley Celtic.
Adam Lund opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he converted Dayle Southwell's astute cross, then nine minutes later turned provider for Tom Allan to head crisply past the Darlington keeper.
It was Allan again that steered home the third goal with aplomb from Matt Rhead's headed assist, but the hosts had clawed one back by the hour mark when Hatfield swept the ball past Reds' keeper George Willis.
With five minutes remaining a penalty was awarded which Hatfield converted, but Alfreton stood firm and repelled the inevitable late surge as Darlington sought an unlikely equaliser.
Several other chances had gone begging as the visitors dominated proceedings in the first half, Southwell creating excellent chances for both Elliott Reeves and Rhead, then early in the second half Southwell curled a delightful shot against the crossbar.
There was an injury concern over Bobby Johnson, who felt a tweak whilst taking a corner and had to be substituted as early as the 17th minute after lengthy treatment.
